Interior with verandah doors
Materials & Technique:
paintings, oil on composition board
Primary Insc: signed and dated l.l., black oil paint "G. Cossington Smith 54".
Cossington Smith’s friend Lucy Swanton, one of the directors at Macquarie Galleries, was taken with the early interiors and encouraged her to work on a larger scale. The result was her most significant interior to that point, Interior with verandah doors. Swanton recalled seeing this work exhibited and not selling: ‘I looked at this beautiful painting hanging there, still unsold. It just shone from the wall. I thought, “That’s for me” and I bought it myself’. She later gifted it to the National Gallery of Australia.
