LESS DETAIL
As the economic boom of the 1950s had placed an increasing demand on Australia’s labour force, the migration policy was revised to increase the numbers of Europeans gaining assisted passage to Australia.
This photograph, European migrants arriving in Sydney was taken by the renowned photojournalist David Moore as the ship, the Galileo Galilei, berthed at the overseas terminal at Circular Quay, Sydney in 1966.
The faces of the people in the photograph display a mixture of emotions. It is a moving portrait capturing the hopes and fears of people spanning several generations. They are coming to the end of a long sea-voyage and are about to start a new life in a foreign land.
