JW Tristram’s Landscape is typical of his repertoire of romantic nocturnes in celebration of the Australian bush. Tristram, a highly skilled watercolourist, teacher and founding member of the Australian Watercolour Institute was also a great admirer of JJ Hilder, who is also represented in Moist with Farm kitchen 1908. Like Hilder, Tristram often used the reverse side of the paper to paint his watercolours – allowing the watery pigment to pool in the highly textured surface of his dappled and dreamy landscapes. In Landscape Tristram paints a rising full moon glowing in the quiet waters of a meandering creek; supple young eucalypt saplings stand tall, strong and graceful, silhouetted against the blue warmth of the bush night.
